As Prime Consultant and Project Architect, GKC first supported the client in a strategic thinking exercise aimed at developing a program that would meet their needs: a place combining space, light, and flexibility that would foster collaboration, team spirit, and encourage the well-being of its occupants. Drawing on these elements, the project team crafted a building that skillfully merges aesthetics, user-friendliness, and functionality through its thoughtful massing, interior spaces, and harmonious integration into the environment. The nine awards this project received at the Grands Prix du Design 2022 are a testament to its success.
Nestled in an industrial zone near a low-density residential area in southeast Ottawa, the 226,000 sq. ft. building boasts four large glass volumes in contrasting shades (bird-friendly) that flood the space with natural light. The expansive glazing, combined with the building's strategic orientation, follows bioclimatic architectural principles that enhance the headquarters’ energy efficiency.
The main entrance features a striking all-glass atrium, notable for its impressive height and street-facing location. Serving as the primary circulation route within the building, it creates a seamless connection between the various office spaces on either side.
The company’s signature colors—yellow, black, and white—are integrated into both the exterior and interior design of the head office, enhancing its inviting and friendly atmosphere while clearly distinguishing different spaces. The vibrant yellow infuses warmth and energy into the building, while the interplay of transparency and metal panels on the upper floors brings a sense of rhythm and lightness to the overall design.
The atrium, which welcomes both employees and visitors, embodies the brand’s colours in a dynamic theme of movement and light, highlighted by a striking central staircase. The three-dimensional arrangement of landings and flights of steps fosters a distinctive visual connection with the entire atrium space.
Designed with versatility in mind, the offices can easily be adapted to meet various needs—whether for individual work, small group collaboration, or relaxation. They are organized around meeting rooms that offer both casual and structured environments. This modular design promotes teamwork and communication, ensuring the offices are prepared for the future of work. Additionally, the building features a training room, a spacious and bright cafeteria, coffee areas on each floor, and other amenities that prioritize staff well-being.
To foster interaction and socialization, pedestrian zones have been established around the building's exterior. The landscape design complements the architecture, featuring mineral paving and plant elements placed in an irregular pattern, echoing the contrasting treatment of the facades. Additionally, the exterior design encompasses the existing warehouse at the rear of the building and the coming installation of a new store at the front. This thoughtful layout promotes safe and harmonious coexistence between pedestrians, vehicles, and trucks while seamlessly integrating the building into its surroundings.
